Malaysian singer-actor Nicholas Teo is unattached for a reason.

And it has inspired him to pen the title track of his sixth and latest album, Let's Not Fall In Love Again, which was released here in September.

Teo was at Overtime@Dempsey Hill on Sunday evening to promote his newest offering since 2009's The Moment Of Silence.

Describing his single Let's Not Fall In Love Again, the boyish-looking 30-year- old told The New Paper in Mandarin: "Being able to draw on past experiences helps me to sing in a more convincing manner.

"In this case, the song is saying that if I keep breaking up and getting back together with a girl, I have to ask myself: Do we want to keep doing this?

"Sometimes it's better to remain friends."

Although Teo declined to specify what past experiences he was referring to, he said the song is not about Taiwanese actress-singer Cyndi Wang, who was his co-star in the 2006 Taiwanese TV series Smiling Pasta.

The duo have been linked romantically in the past, but he insists they're not dating.

Teo said: "We hung out quite a bit, but only as good friends.

"When a guy goes out with a girl, people automatically assume that there's something on."

But then he hinted that Wang "has a very sexy appearance" and added that a future relationship with Wang was "quite possible".

Teo said: "My requirements are very simple. She (my future girlfriend) should be my best friend with whom I can discuss anything.

"She must also be able to support me through thick and thin.

"My label manager jokingly told me to hurry up and find a girl, which may help raise my profile. "Of course, if and when I actually do find someone, (my manager) may have some objections!"

For now, Teo is focused on striking a work-life balance.

"It's important to have fun and be able to relax after work, as long as you don't drink to excess. "I used to go home straight after work and rest because I wanted to be dedicated.

"I realised that I couldn't relax at home either, because I'd feel guilty about not meeting my friends," said Teo, adding that he had made a stopover in Kuching on his way to Singapore just to celebrate his birthday with his Malaysian friends.

Perhaps it's this level of commitment that his fans appreciate.

Singaporean Samantha Ker, a Singapore Institute of Management student and a member of the Nicholas Teo Singapore Official Fans Club, could not agree more.

The 20-year-old told The New Paper: "He's very friendly for a singer and also very attractive to women in a down-to-earth way."

With nearly 100 of Teo's supporters crammed into Overtime@Dempsey Hill, a few unlucky ones had to stand outside in the rain under their umbrellas to catch a glimpse of their idol.
Approachable

Dressed in a long-sleeved V-neck cardigan over a white T-shirt and baggy pants, Teo could easily pass off as a K-pop star, given his tousled locks and small eyes.

He seemed bemused at the comparison, saying: "I never deliberately set out to emulate Korean singers, who are more distant and less approachable.

"I see myself as a storyteller when I sing, so being able to relate to my audience is a must."

Teo was at his affable best as he bantered and played games with fans between the two songs he performed from his latest album, Let's Not Fall In Love Again and Words From A Friend.

Miss Coey Lai, a 25-year-old casino marketing executive from Malaysia, said Teo "sings better in person".

He also showed no signs of the appendicitis he suffered in Beijing three weeks ago, which was coupled with diarrhoea.

It was so bad that when he was in hospital, he "could not stand up at all".

Miss Wen Yiwen, 21, a Malaysian who works as a cashier in Singapore, described Teo's performance as "very moving".

After receiving an autographed poster from Teo on-stage, she said excitedly: "I'm going to go home straight away and frame it up!"
