THERE is nothing quite like love to bring and bind people together, as evident during the IceCream 4u Charity Concert 2010 last Saturday night at the Stadium Badminton Cheras in KL.

People came in droves as proof of their love for their favourite Malaysian artistes, who in turn had flown down from their base in Taiwan to sing for charity, all done out of love!

A total of eight Malaysian artistes and two Taiwanese singers lent their weight to the event, performing for three hours much to the fans’delight.

As lights dimmed, the stage was soon set for a compelling role-playing scene that tells of a heartbreaking story of a little girl at an orphanage waving goodbye to her close friend whom she calls ‘big brother’, as he has been adopted by a couple.

The brother consoles her with a packet of sweets, and as he leaves, the girl is left wondering when her turn will come to have a family.

Later, songwriter-singer Yi Jet Qi was first to emerge on stage in a cropped red vest to perform his two self-penned numbers, the intensely-expressed Wu (Sobbing) and the ballad of Shi Jiet MoYuen Huo (Fireworks at the End of Century).

“Thank you for the turnout, we are glad to be able to do this with love, for the children who need us.

“Let this be more than just a concert, that after tonight, we will continue spreading love to the needy,” said Yi, before introducing Fish Leong.

Both Yi and Leong make up two thirds of the founders behind the concert, together with Malaysian Lee Sinje, who was not able to make it this year due to singing commitments.

Leong started singing the uptempo song Zhin Ji (Silence) with Penny Tai coming on stage for a duet.

The night promised to be long as fans awaited the emergence of other artistes. Victor Wong Ping Kuan was next as he sang Teng Ni De Zhe Ren and Yi Chiet Wei Lei Ai.

Taiwanese veteran songstress Zeng Shu Qin appeared from behind the shadows to belt out the dreamy number Vincent (Starry Starry Night) followed by her hit Mandarin song Lu Bing Hua while strumming her guitar.

Malaysian Zhang Zhi Chen (Z-Chen) carried on the momentum with the song Kuai Le (Happiness) and Ke Ai Bu Ke Ai (To Love or Not to Love).

The pace slowed a little as the demure Yu Heng, on the keyboard, sang Yi Ran Si Peng You (Still Friends) and the English oldie Que Sera, Sera.

Audiences love surprises, and this was evident when Wang Qi Ming (A-Ming), who makes half of the now disbanded group Nian Sau, appeared on stage. Screams could be heard as soon as he introduced his previous ‘other half’ Fang Jiong Bin (A-Bin), who has since made a name for himself as a solo artiste.

“It has been more than seven years since we parted ways,” A-Bin said.

They sang the Hokkien version of their popular number Shuang Ren Xiang Mong before the stage was left for A-Bin to sing his hit Huai Ren. Temperatures rose when all three — A-Bin, Z-Chen and Nicholas Teo stood on stage to sing their own cover versions of compositions like Yao Liu Lei, originally performed by the late Danny Chan and the English song Wonderful Tonight.

It was Teo’s turn to perform solo and he did so with Shuo Ni Ye Yi Yang Ai Zhe Woh and Zhi Jian. Later, he apologised as he was not feeling too well and had struggled a little with the tunes.
One of the most anticipated moments of the night was the appearance of Taiwanese maestro Jonathan Lee.

“Let us make a date tonight that all of you here will be back next year to support the third installment of IceCream 4u charity concert,” he said.

He then called Penny, Victor and Jet Yi up on stage again, each with their own guitars, to strum and sing acapella. Penny chose to perform Lee’s ex-wife Sandy Lam’s tune.

For the final performance, Fish sang Tian Tian Xiang Ni and Wind Beneath My Wings.

The artistes then all walked up on stage with some children to sing Shu Yao Ai.

All proceeds raised from the sale of tickets and merchandise will be channelled to Pusat Penjagaan Kanak-Kanak Cacat Taman Megah and Dignity for Children Foundation.
