EXCITEMENT continues to mount as we count down to Malaysia’s first ever Chinese television awards show, presented by Ntv7. The Golden Awards is barely seven weeks away.

On Tuesday, the gold-plated trophy was unveiled at a ceremony at Pullman Putrajaya Lakeside Hotel in Putrajaya.

Also revealed was the official theme song for the Golden Awards, titled The Most Beautiful Horizon. It was recorded by an ensemble of local personalities comprising Gary Yap, Chan Wei Wei, Wee Kheng Ming, Yise Loo, William San, Melvin Sia, Mayjune Tan, Cheryl Lee, Henley Hii, Orange Tan, Hoon Mei Sim, Owen Yap, Hishiko Woo and Jack Yap.

The Golden Awards will be held on Sept 25 at the Putrajaya International Convention Centre (PICC).


Ntv7 general manager Airin Zainul said: “The awards stand alone as symbols of superior achievement in the Malaysian Chinese television industry. The gold-plated trophy embodies the outstanding work of those who had contributed tirelessly to the local television industry, giving viewers some of the best Chinese shows.”

The awards are divided into 19 sub-categories: seven for drama, eight for non-drama and four for viewers’ choice.

The drama category comprises: best drama, best actor, best actress, best supporting actor, best supporting actress, best newcomer and best drama theme song.

The non-drama categories are best current affairs programme, best current affairs host, best magazine programme, best magazine programme host, best reality programme, best reality programme host, best variety and entertainment programme, as well as best variety and entertainment programme host.

Viewers may vote for most popular actor (11 nominees), most popular actress (14 nominees), most popular drama (10 nominees) and most popular TV host/presenter for a non-drama (13 nominees). Results are tabulated as follows: 50% from SMS votes, 40% from online votes (ntv7.com.my/goldenawards) and 10% from balloting at golden awards roadshows.

Public voting via SMS and online is from Aug 24 till Sept 23 at midnight.

Voting mechanics are as follows: SMS in GAnominee’s code to 33399.

The charge is 65 sen per vote inclusive of telco charges.

A total of RM100,000 in cash prizes will be awarded.

Winners in each of the 19 sub-categories will take home RM5,000 cash as well as a gold-plated trophy.

The hosts of the awards presentation ceremony are Mediacorp Singapore’s TV host extraordinaire Bryan Wong and Malaysia’s radio and TV host Cheryl Lee.

Performers and presenters at the awards night include homegrown international Mandopop stars such as Fish Leong, Nicholas Teo, Jac Wu, Chen Jia Kai and Thomas & Jack.

International artistes who are part of the star-studded line-up include 29th Hong Kong Film Awards best new performer Aarif Rahman (also known as Aarif Lee in Echoes Of The Rainbow), former Shadowfax violinist Jamii Szmadzinski, veteran Singaporean host Quan Yi Fong, as well as Taiwanese super idols Sam Lee and Godfrey Gao.

A red carpet event will be held on the same day, starting at 7pm, while the live telecast on Ntv7 begins at 7.30pm.

The awards presentation ceremony starts at 8.30pm and ends at 11.30pm.

Live streaming of the event will also be available on ntv7.com.my/goldenawards.

There will also be updates on Facebook and Twitter as well as post-event details in Ntv7’s facebook gallery.

Tickets to the Golden Awards show can be obtained from Aug 23 till Sept 3: via roadshows, at Ntv7 office located at Sri Pentas, Petaling Jaya, Selangor, during office hours, via online contests conducted at the Golden Awards’ official website (ntv7.com.my/goldenawards) and via online contests conducted by official media partners 988 and One FM radio stations.

Sept 4: Megamall, Butterworth, Penang (3pm) and Alor Setar Mall, Kedah (8pm).

Sept 5: Taiping Sentral Mall, Perak (2pm) and Klang Parade, Selangor (8pm).

Sept 18: Sungei Wang Plaza, Kuala Lumpur (2pm) and Mahkota Parade, Malacca (8pm).

Sept 19 The Summit, Batu Pahat (2pm) and Sutera Mall, Skudai (6pm), both in Johor.
