The state government has appointed singer-actor Nicholas Teo as Penang's "green ambassador" to help it spread awareness on environmental issues.
The expenses incurred from the appointment of the Taiwan-based Malaysian artiste, who will serve as the ambassador for a year, will be entirely borne by private sponsors.
State Health, Welfare, Caring Society and Environment Committee chairman Phee Boon Poh said Teo, 29, would encourage participation of his target audience and fans in community projects on environmental issues.
"He will provide full support to the state's green campaign, despite his tight schedule," he said in a press conference at his Komtar office here Tuesday.
Teo, who was present, said he was honoured by appointment and would try his best to spread the green message.
"I am glad Penang has taken the initiative to start promoting the use of recyclable bags.
"I believe it is also an artiste's responsibility to do his part for society, whenever possible," he said, adding that he hoped to start inculcating the habit of using recyclable bags in his fans.
Phee said Teo was the state's choice because of his wide fan base in Malaysia and the Asean region.
"As he promoteas the green campaign, he will also be promoting the brand of Penang," he added.
Komtar assemblyman Ng Wei Aik, who is chairman of the Penang Go Green campaign, said Teo would make his first appearance as the state's green ambassador at the Green Concert in Juru Auto-City on June 5.
About 10,000 people are expected to attend the concert, which will also feature artistes such as Rynn Lim, Preetha, Suki Low, Yasin and Shila.
