A TOTAL of 65 awards, including Top 25 Golden Melodies, were given out at the MY Astro Music Awards (Mama) event at Arena Of Stars in Genting Highlands recently.
Into its third year, the awards show pays tribute to both local and international artistes for their contribution to the Chinese music industry. It is also a platform for the artistes to perform and to celebrate their win with fans.
The star-studded guest list included Taiwan’s Wilber Pan, Linda Liao, Yoga Lin, Della Ding Dang, Liang Wen Yin, Aska Yang, Yen-j, AK and Blue J and Yisa Yu (China).
Others were Hong Kong’s Twins, Sherman Chung, Ken Hung and Denis Ng while local representatives were Nicholas Teo, Fish Leong, Z-Chen, Thomas and Jack, Alvin Chong, Andrew Tan, Athena Beh, Peace Teo, Yise Loo and Jess Lee.
Also making up the VIP list were Astro television personalities and MYFM radio deejays like Vivian Tok and Gan Mei Yan.
Team Malaysia became the night’s biggest winner, making a clean sweep of major awards including Best Single (Andrew Tan and Bii — Shi Zai Bi Xing), Best Album (Z-Chen — Ni Ai Shang De), Best Song of the Year (Nicholas Teo — Bie Zaai Jing Dong Ai Qing) and Most Voted Singer (Jess Lee).
International artistes who took home major awards were Wilber Pan (Best Stage Performer), Yoga Lin (Best Breakthrough Singer) and Della Ding (Best International Female Singer).
This year’s event also saw a heartfelt tribute to some of the industry’s great talents. Local singers Jess Lee, Z-Chen, Leong and Teo took turns to sing songs made popular by the Whitney Houston who died in February. They also performed songs by “the Queen of Hats”, Taiwanese diva Fong Fei Fei who succumbed to lung cancer in January.
American-born Taiwanese pop star Pan became the subject of conversation when, after he won the Best International Male Singer, he gave the award to fans seated at the front row. “Without you, this is nothing. I’d like to present this award to my fans here,” Pan said, before walking away.
Leong took the opportunity to inform fans that she will be back for a concert on July 7. Twins also announced a concert here on June 9 and Della, on April 28.
Hosted by Jack Lim, Wan Wai Fun, Royce Tan and Bernard Hiew, the event was also aired live on Astro AEC (Channel 301) and MYFM simultaneously. It brought music fans from across the globe under the same roof with the theme revolving around “more music, more lives”.
